Tip #1: Give out just ONE of something to your trick-or-treatersGiving away just one of something rather than a handful is better for the planet, better for children and better for your bank account. Let children choose their one "special" treat or treasure. Watch and you'll see: they'll cherish it more!Tip #2: Say 'no' to store-bought decor unless it is made from eco-wise materials or is ethically made (i.e. fair trade)Halloween ranks second after Christmas for spending on holiday decor. Instead of buying more or less buy less of more. These fair trade streamers may run you a few more dollars than those at your party store, but you can celebrate knowing that the people who made them were paid well and treated fairly. Tip #3: Compost your leftover candy & make wearable art out of the wrappersIn some places in the country, such as King County, WA, all food scraps, including candy, can be included in the yard waste bin. Since 25% of the methane gas released from landfills comes from food, think of the significant difference we can make simply by recycling our food. Tip #4: Light the night with eek-o-friendly choicesIf you plan to invest in some new décor this year, why not welcome trick-or-treaters with solar or LED string lights? Or light the night with traditional candlelit jack-o-lanterns or with spooky walkway luminarias (visit our website to learn how to make your own Halloween luminarias using free BoxWorks templates). For trick-or-treating, try a battery free, shakable or crank-operated flashlight to light your waykids love them!
