Gossip Blog: 'The Serena Also Rises'
(The CW) NEW YORK - NEW YORK - Every week, New York City Socialistas, Kelly Will and Gregory Littley, will recap the latest 'Gossip Girl' episode, and give the insiders' view into what it's really like to be fashionable and fabulous in the city that never sleeps.
The new school year isn't even a month old and already the girls are stressing over fashion week arrangements. Blair Waldorf is arranging her mothers fashion show seating chart as Jenny Humphrey (intern at 15) is hard at work on Eleanor Waldorf's Spring 2009 line. Blair, still burned from Serena's seemingly overnight return to "Queen Bee" status, is looking forward to the tradition of sharing special fashion week moments with her best 'frenemy.'
Dan, trying his best to stay out of ex-gf Serena's path, dives head first into applying to Yale, putting his Dartmouth hopes on the back burner. He sends a collection of five short stories to a whiskey soaked professor, Noah Shapiro. Why is Dan always picking mentors with drinking problems? After a brief critique from Noah, Dan begrudgingly decides to take up a different writing direction...dark, soul- less and a lot more selfish. And who better to inspire Dan than Chuck Bass. Hoping to 'studdy' his new subject, Dan asks to tag along with Chuck for a night of debauchery. Chuck allows it, mostly because he's bored and Nate is M.I.A. (a trend that is becoming more and more frequent - Where in the world is Nate Archibald????). The night starts off harmless enough with Dan meeting Chuck at lounge eerily reminiscent of the popular NYC Gramercy Park Hotel hang. Chuck soon tires of Dan and ends the night dumping drunk, shoeless Dan out on a street in (gasp) midtown.
More shocking is the sad state of Eleanor Waldorf front row seating chart for her upcoming fashion show. Jenny, armed with a stroke of genius and the latest copy of Women's Wear Daily, decides to take it upon her self and up the A-list appeal of Blair's seating arrangements. Eleanor Waldorf is grateful and praises Jenny's ingenuity. Jenny places Serena and new socialite bff Poppy next to each other. Blair, under the impression that Serena will be with her backstage as always, flips when she discovers Serena's new arrangements.
The show takes place at Capitale and is full of New York's society set. Tinsley Mortimer (her second appearance this season) poses with designer Micheal Kors before they take there seats. Blair, fully enraged with jealousy at the attention Serena's first row seat is attracting, makes it her mission to sabotage anyone who's helped Serena get to that position. Each attempt fails, Jenny comes out on top and even gets to have her first design appear in Eleanor Waldorf's show. One fashion PR flack chimes in that André Leon Talley "loved it." Out of all the characters that Gossip Girl has churned out, Jenny's plot is the most outlandish - this latest episode was way over the top!
Meanwhile big brother Dan is not giving up on his budding "bromance" with the intolerable (and best-written character) Chuck Bass. (Or shall we call him, 'Charles Trout') Determined to suck every creative spark from the neckerchief donning Mr. Bass, Dan gives it another try. This time both boys end up in jail.
Of course Chuck has a pretty easy exit strategy already planned out, but before Mr. Bass's lawyer fronts the bail, Chuck reveals to Dan that his mother died giving birth to him. Chuck painfully admits that he has always suspected his father blames his birth for his mother's death. This is just the kind of dark drama that Dan was looking for. Noah Shapiro would be so proud. Dan keeps this in mind when he calls Noah, instead of his dad, to bail him out. But, inevitably lacking the guts to make a splash, Dan decides to keep Chuck's secret and find other source material. Good luck without Chuck, Lonely-boy.
After every attempt to ruin Serena's night at Eleanor Waldorf's fashion show falls flat, Blair tries to ask Serena for forgiveness. That is something the OLD Serena van der Woodsen would have gladly granted. But time has passed and on the advice from fellow social climber, Poppy, Serena makes it clear to Blair that she is done playing a supporting role to Blair's insecurities. Ouch, S!
Now, five episodes in, the show is really staring to cook. This guilty pleasure is bubbling over and we can't wait to see what happens next. We'll get by watching real-life drama unfold all around us at our usual hot spots. And don't forget, fellow gossipers, the next episode is in TWO weeks.
We'll be waiting. XOXO
