Stylista Blog: Pilot Episode
(The CW) LOS ANGELES - Every week, the editors of WhoWhatWear.com, a site run by Los Angeles based fashion know-it-alls, will break down the good, the bad and the drama of Stylista.
Pilot Episode
There are a few ways to upgrade your fashion sense this fall: change out your solid tights for patterned pairs, incorporate chain-link necklaces into your outfits, and embrace spring's florals by mixing them with fall's dark colors.
However, if you're looking to chicly upgrade your Tivo's, the sole solution is to watch and record the fiercely-trendy Stylista competition show every Wednesday night!
No group of individuals are more thrilled to observe the ongoing behind-the-scenes footage at ELLE for the next eight weeks than those of us powering WhoWhatWear.com (it's no wonder; our site's creators are former ELLE Editors Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr), but we expect our zest for the fabulous show to be contagious.
With all shots in the vein of The Devil Wears Prada, the realistic Stylista begins with a short introduction of each hopeful assistant editor, takes us through their first three challenges delegated by Brett Ramey (ELLE Photo Director), Maling Joseph (ELLE Fashion Booking Editor), and Joe Zee (ELLE Creative Director), and concludes with the elimination of one contestant who isn't up to par (or well-dressed enough) to remain in the ELLE hallways.
There is perhaps no one more qualified to ultimately reign over the eleven wannabe fashion editors than the highly-renowned Fashion News Director of ELLE Magazine herself, Anne Slowey. The queen of the show, Slowey is campy and intimidating, thanks to her uniform of statement necklaces and wide patent belts, so when she speaks in her low-pitched voice, you listen.
The impetus for this whole circus, the proverbial carrot that tempts the contestants to jump through hoops (to hopelessly mix metaphors), is a Junior Editor Position at ELLE, plus a rent-free year in a Manhattan apartment and clothing allowance at H&M (two perks that are so amazing that they'd almost make us tempted to re-enter the print magazine world. At least for a second.)
This tantalizing prize attracted such diversely catty contestants like Devin, who is a seasoned editor of NYU's fashion publications, William, the over-the-top dressed British freelance fashion assistant who Slowey calls out for his obnoxious "flair for color", and Kate, the busty black sheep of the group who is a former law student with no fashion background whatsoever. Animosity immediately arises between Kate and Megan (a boutique owner who isn't entertaining or fabulous enough to justify her bitchy demeanor) and you can tell their contrast is going to make for good television throughout the season (pending that they aren't eliminated before the true claws come out). We all have a soft spot for the underdog, so we're rooting for Kate.
The initial task the prospective bunch are faced with include preparing a healthy breakfast for Slowey -- we learn she likes iced lattes accompanied by a small straw, only eats almonds if they're soaked overnight, and mixing her melons with other fruit is a no-no.
Then there is a group-assigned timed shopping spree at H&M's Flagship Store where the would-be assistants must style outfits for the office, and a final mission of creating a faux contributor's page. In the end we say goodbye to Arnaldo, the Columbia-grad whose inability to take style risks and "negligent" approach toward a contributor page fail to meet ELLE's standards. His Justin Guarini hair won't be missed.
The intimidating and condescending environment the contestants are subjected to makes us wonder why anyone (Johanna) would give up their life as a military analyst/Chinese linguist in hopes of potential year-long torture, but we are nevertheless, anxious for the outcome and unquestionably hooked on Stylista's cocktail-ring grasp.
