800 miles from New York and 2,000 miles from Los Angeles, Fall Out Boy was founded in suburban Wilmette (outside Chicago). Their first two shows together were without a name. After their second show they asked the audience for suggestions and one of those offered was "Fall Out Boy" (as in Radioactive Man's sidekick from The Simpsons). In February 2003, Fall Out Boy released a mini-album titled Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend. Good national publicity set off a small bidding war among record labels for the group's contract.
Fall Out Boy eventually signed a deal with Fueled by Ramen, the label co-owned by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello. They also received an advance from Island Records to record their proper debut. Their breakout album, From Under the Cork Tree, followed in spring 2005. It achieved double platinum status after selling more than 2.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, and garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Their first single, "Sugar We're Goin' Down", peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single off the album, "Dance, Dance", peaked at #9.
The success of From Under the Cork Tree wasn't taken for granted. Instead of resting on their laurels, Fall Out Boy opted to go immediately back to work in spite of a hectic tour schedule by releasing their next album, Infinity On High in February of 2007. The lead single, "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" reached #1 on the Pop 100, while the album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 260,000 copies its first week.
Fall Out Boy has collaborated with rappers Kanye West and Timbaland. Stump was featured on two songs with Gym Class Heroes (who are also signed with Fueled by Ramen), including their hit single "Cupid's Chokehold". Fall Out Boy has shared the stage with Less Than Jake, Rufio, The All-American Rejects, Yellowcard and others. Most recently, the band performed at the Live Earth concert July 7, 2007 and is currently headlining the Honda Civic Tour.
