    Culinary Creativity: Hallava Falafel

    by Howard Shack | KSTW.com

About a year ago you may have noticed a rather unusual sight around town.  That's when Rick Baker first put his Hallava Falafel truck into service.  It's big, it's yellow and it has a wicked ram's head painted on the side.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Rick's falafel and shawarma sandwiches are the best in town – so building a loyal customer base hasn't been too hard.  Making sure his customers know where to find him is the tricky part. According to Rick, the hardest part of running the falafel truck is finding a place to park.   Turns out that's no easy thing to do here in Seattle – there are rules and regulations and all manner of grey area regarding both.  Just when he gets a steady spot to park, a local business owner politely (or not) asks him to find another place to set up shop.

Rick is in this for the long haul and he has an almost philanthropic approach to bringing delicious, affordable food to the masses.  Sure, he likes to make a buck same as the next guy – but to hear him talk about how all of the world's great cities have a rich mosaic of street food vendors and how Seattle is seriously lacking in that department makes one become a devoted fan not only of the food but of the man behind the food.

As of now, you can find the Hallava Falafel truck parked outside 9lb Hammer in Georgetown on Fridays from 6p – 10p(ish).  For a lunchtime fix you're going to have to stay tuned to his MySpace page to find out where he'll be parked:
